About the episode

“Specialization isn’t about narrowing your options. It’s about amplifying your impact.” – Dr. Jessica Drummond

It’s December, which means every practitioner, every coach, every clinician I know is mapping their goals for the year ahead. They want to grow their practices, specialize in perimenopause, earn more, create more time freedom, or finally heal their burnout. Those goals matter, but most people neglect the foundational question that makes any of them possible: Who are you actually serving? Not women in perimenopause, but the specific subset of women whose problems you are uniquely trained, equipped, and energized to solve.

The reality is that perimenopause is a hot topic right now. It’s on morning shows, in major publications, and at the center of countless books, supplements, and brands. That visibility is a win for women, but it also means practitioners can no longer stand out by simply saying they specialize in perimenopause. To build a thriving, sustainable practice, you need a clear, deeply aligned niche and a business model that supports the level of presence, bandwidth, and clinical excellence your clients deserve.

Today, I’m sharing a four-part framework to help you choose a niche within perimenopause that you’re uniquely positioned to own and the structure you need to move into the new year with confidence and sustainability. We’ll explore how to align your clinical skill set with a business model that protects your energy, how to identify underserved sub-niches, why your pricing must reflect your depth of expertise, revenue model strategies, capacity planning, the importance of choosing a focus that energizes you rather than burns you out, and more.

Enjoy the episode, and let’s innovate and integrate together!

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:00:00 Hi there. Welcome back to the Integrative Women’s Health Podcast. I’m your host, doctor Jessica Drummond. And it is December, which means every professional, every practitioner, every coach, every clinician I know is setting 2026 goals, setting goals for next year. Right now, here’s what I keep hearing. I want to grow my practice. I want to specialize in perimenopause. I want to make more money. I want to have more time flexibility. I want to heal my burnout. Great goals. But here’s the question no one is asking who exactly are you serving? What is the role of your business? And I don’t just mean women in perimenopause. What’s your specific lane within perimenopause? Because here’s the thing when it comes to marketing in 2026, In 2026. The practitioners who thrive won’t be the ones who say I’m a perimenopause specialist. They’ll be the ones who say and who actually are at a level of excellence. I specialize in helping perimenopausal athletes maintain performance, or I work with women in perimenopause who have chronic pelvic pain.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:01:21 That specificity is what changes everything. I’ve been working in this field for 25 years now, and what has evolved in niching and marketing is that your niche is so important to the kind of business and business model that you create, because there has to be this true intersection between your excellence in your clinical and coaching skill set and the business model you create.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:01:58 Hi and welcome to the Integrative Women’s Health Podcast. I’m your host, Doctor Jessica Drummond, and I am so thrilled to have you here. Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:02:57 Welcome to the Integrative Women’s Health Podcast.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:03:00 If you’re new around here, I’m a physical therapist, clinical nutritionist, health coach and founder of the Integrative Women’s Health Institute, which in 2026 is going to turn 20. We’ve trained over 3500 health practitioners in Evidence-Based Perimenopause and Menopause Care. And what I’ve learned after 25 years in this field is that clinical expertise is just a part of the equation. The other part is business clarity, because you have to have the energy to serve. Knowing how to position yourself, price your services, and build a practice that doesn’t burn you out. That’s what separates practitioners who are busy but broke and overwhelmed from practitioners who are thriving and financially, and time and even location flexible. Today’s podcast episode is going to help you do both. Build your clinical confidence and your business model confidence. If you love what you hear today. Subscribe and don’t miss an episode and you can follow me at the Integrative Women’s Health Institute comm or on Instagram at Integrative Women’s Health. All right, let’s get into it. Why does this matter? Now, here’s what’s happening right now in the perimenopause space.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:04:22 Even five years ago, gosh, maybe even three years ago, if you said I specialize in perimenopause, you were ahead of the curve. There were very few people who did that and almost no one who was talking about it. But currently in 2025, perimenopause is everywhere. It’s in the New York Times, it’s on Good Morning America. There are multiple bestselling books. There are new supplements, there are menopause experts kind of popping up everywhere. And actually this is great because this is a very underserved area of women’s health, and we actually need more professionals out there providing the health care, not just talking about and informing about perimenopause, but actually providing the health care. And so if everyone can just willy nilly be a perimenopause specialist, then no one actually is. You’re competing on price. You’re trying to stand out in a crowded market. Your ideal clients can’t tell the difference between you and the ten other people in your area who claim to be perimenopause experts. So how do you differentiate? The key is that you go one level deeper, and this is how true skilled health care excellence aligns with what works with actual marketing.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:05:50 You pick a niche within In perimenopause, you become known for serving a specific type of client with a very specific set of challenges. And when you do that, three things happen. First, you stop competing on the pricing of your services. You become the specific person for that specific issue, which means you can charge premium rates. Second, your marketing gets so much easier because you’re not trying to speak to everyone. You’re speaking to one person with one specific problem that you uniquely know how to solve. And third, and this is the one people don’t talk about enough. You actually enjoy your work more, and you actually get better at it because you’re working with the clients. You love the cases that light you up. And so this is what we’re going to build today in this episode, your specific niche. And we’re going to talk about the revenue model that supports the implementation of that niche. So let’s start with the framework. I’m going to give you four steps here to help you choose your niche and build out the revenue model that will successfully support that for you next year without burnout.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:07:09 This is exactly what we’re going to be working on later this week in our 2026 Business Success Workshop. This is where you get to define your unique business and financial goals for next year. And if you can’t make it live, you can join the recording. This is exclusively for our members in the membership, which also includes a lot of other cool things which we’ll talk about later. All right. Step one of this framework, the expertise audit. You know, I’m constantly talking about excellence and expertise. What do you already know deeply. And I don’t mean just random weekend certifications I mean what have you spent years learning? What are the cases you’ve loved working with and successfully helped those women to deeply heal? Take your background and this additional focused learning in perimenopause and chronic illness, and apply it to whatever years of experience you had before that. So maybe you’re a physical therapist who’s worked extensively with pelvic pain. That’s your foundation, or you’re a health coach who came from a sports performance background, also highly relevant.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:08:23 Or you’re a nurse practitioner who worked in sexual medicine before you pivoted specifically to perimenopause and menopause health. That expertise doesn’t disappear. Here’s what I want you to think about. What conditions have you helped women heal from over and over? What populations have you worked with? What frameworks or modalities are you already trained in. What do you feel really comfortable in? Your niche will build on what you already know and what you want to continue doing. There may be some things you might want to leave behind. Just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean you have to do it. You’re not starting from scratch. You’re connecting the dots between your existing expertise and perimenopause and menopause. So pause this podcast for a second if you need to, and jot down the 3 to 5 areas where you already have some depth of hands on experience, even if it’s your own personal experience. All right. Step two The passion alignment. My second question for you is what working with, what kinds of women, what kinds of clinical challenges light you up? Because here’s the thing you can be really good at something and hate doing that.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:09:44 You don’t have to keep doing that. Maybe you can help women with blood sugar issues, insulin resistance, PCOS, prediabetes, diabetes. But does that just bore you to death? Or do you absolutely get excited? What are the cases where you lose track of time that you could go down those rabbit holes all day? You finish a session and you think that felt so easy? I could do this all day. For me, it’s been the complex cases, the women who’ve seen 5 or 10 providers and nobody can figure out what’s going on. The ones with overlapping symptoms chronic fatigue, chronic pain, hormone chaos, sleep issues all at once. That’s my zone. I love connecting the dots. I love the detective work and it might be similar for you, but maybe for you it’s different. Maybe you love working with high performance women who want to optimize, not just survive. Maybe they are high level athletes. Maybe they are high level executives. Or maybe you love that education piece. Teaching women how their bodies work, which unfortunately, we’re not generally taught.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:10:59 Whatever it is, pay attention to that. Because if you build a niche around cases you don’t enjoy. You’re just going to burn out in a different way. So think about what client conversations do you look forward to? Do you feel really relaxed and are you able to settle into that like flow focus? What topics could you read about, write about, speak about, talk about, collaborate about for hours and you actually feel energized, not exhausted when you finish doing that. Witnessing and supporting. What kinds of transformation makes you feel most fulfilled? This is where you feel that like deep juiciness, like this is where passion aligns with an actual successful business. Because to have a successful business, if you really focus for something like 1 to 3 years, it’s not forever. The likelihood that you will fail is dramatically reduced. All right. Step three. Let’s do the market demand test which sub niches are actually wide open and have a lot of demand right now. So as I said, many, many women are waking up to this conversation of what perimenopause and menopause are, what they mean, what do they feel like, but they don’t have anyone to go to who can actually help them navigate this.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:12:43 just because you have expertise and passion. But if there’s no demand. You don’t have a business. The good news right now is there are so many underserved and completely unserved sub niches within perimenopause and menopause right now, today. So again, women who are aware they’re in perimenopause, but they go to the gynecologist and the gynecologist like, well, you’re still cycling. You’re not yet in menopause. Right. Let’s look at some examples. What about perimenopause? In female athletes? We have an aging population of women who’ve been active their whole lives. And this is kind of the first time in history when this has ever happened. My mom’s generation, they weren’t cross fitters and runners and yogis and softball players by and large, of course, some were. But women who in large numbers are essentially athletes. Their whole lives are for the first time ever hitting perimenopause, and it’s affecting their performance, how they train, how they feel, their metabolic health, their immune health, their weight loss and weight loss, resistance and recovery challenges.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:14:01 And the vast majority of sports medicine providers have no idea how to assess hormonal shifts. And most menopause providers don’t understand athletic performance demands, particularly in an individual sport. That’s a gap. That’s an in-demand and really juicy niche for someone who’s loved athletics and sports their entire life. Lives to serve a population who’s the first population ever in large numbers to experience this? What about, as another example, perimenopause and sexual health or vaginal issues. Genital urinary syndrome of menopause affects up to 50% of postmenopausal women, but very few people are talking about this. Women are suffering in silence with pain, dryness, urinary issues, loss of libido, challenges with orgasm. If you have a background and you love and get excited by pelvic health, sexual medicine, connectedness, even things like relationship coaching. This is your lane. What about the intersection between perimenopause and chronic pain? The 10% of women who have endometriosis are going to go through perimenopause. All of them, and some of them surgically, abruptly go into menopause. So estrogen decline affects pain signaling, inflammation, joint health, muscle recovery, women with endometriosis.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:15:38 Fibromyalgia. Chronic pelvic pain, migraines. They all can. Could have the possibility of getting worse in perimenopause. But again, most pain specialists, even public health physical therapists who are pretty good experts in this intersection, by and large don’t understand hormonal health. And most hormone specialists don’t understand pain physiology and some of the underlying drivers of chronic pain. And we’re not just talking about endometriosis, we’re talking about migraines. We’re talking about musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause. There are many more, you know, autoimmune disease, osteoarthritis. So there’s another gap for you to explore. What about let me give you another example. Perimenopause and GI or metabolic issues. Insulin resistance PCOS, prediabetes even women who had insulin resistance during pregnancy are at a higher risk of all of these metabolic issues in perimenopause and menopause. These are very common issues. Fatty liver and even non-alcoholic fatty liver that can absolutely be exacerbated by perimenopause and menopause. And you have to have a strongly nuanced skill set in this area and deepen experience to be really good at it.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:17:01 So there are very few people in this area. One more example. Perimenopause and neurodivergent ADHD symptoms worsen in perimenopause. Sensory sensitivities increase. Executive function declines, especially for neurodivergent women, and this transition can feel brutal. Again, there are almost no practitioners who understand both neurodivergent and perimenopause. And if any of these examples are you in our Perimenopause and menopause certificate program, we really focus on helping you heal fully so that you can then do this work with all kinds of vigor and energy, and you’re well rested and you’re excited. Okay. So do you see what I’m getting at here? Your niche is not just perimenopause, it’s perimenopause and your depth of expertise, some of which you will learn here in our Perimenopause and Menopause certificate program. We talk a lot about these intersections. Others you will bring from your past experiences, others you’re just really excited about. You’re a lifelong learner and you’ll deepen parts of that experience through lots of different learning, including your clinical experience with the clients you serve. So which population are you already well equipped to serve? You’re in the top 1% of your field in that little niche.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:18:29 Where do you see the biggest gaps in care? What do women keep asking me about? Like ask yourself, what do women keep asking me about that? Nobody else can answer. There’s your blue ocean, right? They’ve seen their gynecologist. They’ve seen their mental health professional. No one’s been able to help them. And you can get excited about that little blue ocean of excellence. Now let’s get into step four the revenue model. This is where most practitioners get stuck. Most coaches, most clinicians. We don’t like talking about money. We get stuck. You pick a niche, you get excited like you’re already excited. Thinking about those intersections that I just talked about, right? I’m glad. Let’s maintain that level of excitement. Then you try to build a business using the same model that burned you out before. That didn’t give you time freedom before that didn’t give you financial freedom before that, didn’t give you location freedom before. Let’s talk about the math. You are great in science. I know you were great in math too.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:19:39 Or at least good enough, right? We have calculators now. You don’t have to know everything. If you want to make $100,000 a year, just as an example, and you charge $125 per session, you need 800 sessions. That’s 15 plus clients per week, every single week, all year long. That is not sustainable, okay? And that’s why you’re feeling so exhausted. And many of you are working with far more clients per week right now. That is unacceptable. Level of robustness. You cannot care for people at that level of exhaustion. But with this very unique experience where you can help people get better, faster and maybe even save them money, you actually charge $300 per session. Then you only need about seven clients per week already. Far more doable without burnout. And now let’s get even more curious. What if you run a group coaching program? Let’s say you create a 12 week perimenopause program for women specifically struggling with chronic pain conditions. This can be even more deeply sub niche into migraines, endometriosis, rheumatoid arthritis, whatever you want.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:21:06 You charge $1,200 per person. You run this 12 week program twice a year with just ten women in each cohort. That’s $24,000 in revenue from just two programs with only 20 people. You don’t have to repeat that very often to hit your goals. Now you don’t need 800 sessions. You need way fewer one on one clients and or a group coaching program. This math changes everything, because if you’re going to work with these complex clinical niches of women who have really challenging problems that very few people really understand, you need a lot of mental, cognitive, and physical bandwidth. You need to be careful of how you take care of your body and mind, and you need a business that actually supports you. So here’s what you need to walk through and figure out. Here’s what we have to get through any of our money blocks. Here’s where we have to get over and get through any challenges that say, I’m not good at math, and we’re going to support you to get super clear on your annual revenue goal.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:22:24 Your ideal number of work hours per week. What service model actually supports hitting those goals. And this is where that very clear niche specialization gives you leverage. When you’re a generalist, you cannot charge $300 per session. You’re competing with every other practitioner in town who claims to be, whether they are or not. A true perimenopause and menopause specialist. But when you are the perimenopause and chronic pain specialist, or the perimenopause and athlete specialist, or the perimenopause and Potts and MCAT specialist, you are a very rare bird who can help people save health care dollars by solving their problem more efficiently. So you can price your services accordingly. You’re not selling time. You’re selling expertise and you’re selling your own bandwidth. To be able to really support people over time, you’re selling your energy that you have to have. Okay. So we’re going to map all this out in detail. I’m hosting a live workshop on December 11th where we’ll literally do the math together. You’ll figure out your pricing, your service model, your capacity, and you’ll leave with a clear plan for next year.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:24:05 And if you can’t make it live, don’t worry about it. We’re going to have a recording, but you have to be a member of our Iwai membership to join this, so I strongly encourage you to do that. It’s a very low cost membership. You can join monthly, but for now, I want you thinking about what can I realistically deliver without burning out. What pricing actually supports my goals? Do I need to shift from working privately with people to group programs or services? Or do I do a little bit of both? Because your niche determines your revenue model, and then your revenue model literally helps to determine your quality of life. How do we actually do this right? So a lot of our students in the Integrative Women’s Health Institute understand this conceptually, but they’ve never really sat down with a blueprint with a person who’s been doing this for over 20 years. As I said, the Integrative Women’s Health Institute turns 20 and 2026, and we’re so excited about that. You’re thinking like, this sounds great, Jessica, but what do I actually do You to figure it out.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:25:27 And this is where we really do have to walk through a clear blueprint that aligns with your goals. It’s a great question. Here’s what I recommend. First, don’t overthink this. You don’t need to have it figured out. All today I actually was working with one of our clients yesterday or earlier this week, and she was like, I need my 10 to 15 year plan. Listen, guys. Anyone who tells you in the current age that we’re in in the world that they’re creating a 10 to 15 year plan. This is absolutely crazy. Like, we have no idea what’s going to be happening in 12 to 15 years. We need a one year solid plan. You need a process, a system for working through these questions. And you need the support so you can make a clear confident decision about your 2026 niche and business strategy. Now, I would think about this in terms of one year but three years of intended commitment. Okay. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do in the 2026 Success Workshop later this week.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:26:43 This is a half day workshop for our Integrative Women’s Health Institute membership community. And we’re going deep because I want you to make the actual decisions during this workshop. What is the number? What is the very specific niche? What is the business model? And I want you to feel like you’re doing that with my support long term. Your vision for 2026 is not just revenue goals, but actually how you want to feel and the energy you want to have every day when you wake up. Think about this like you’re sitting across the table from a client who is really exhausted and sick and not doing well. They don’t need you to be exhausted and sick and burned out. They need you to wake up in the morning like excited, full of energy, at deep, calm, rested peace that will help them to feel your values alignment. Because if your business doesn’t align with your values, like right now, if you’re going to work and you’re like running around like a chicken with your head cut off and you know you’re not doing great client care, you’re going to burn out.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:27:57 No matter how much money may you make, no matter what kinds of clients you’re working with. Your strategic business plan for the year, including your niche, your revenue model, your service offerings, your pricing, your marketing strategy all of it contributes to your physical, mental, cognitive, and emotional energy. So by the time you leave this workshop, I want you to feel really excited, but also really supported in how to hit those goals. We’re going to talk about the exactly how to we’re going to talk about your time management, your goal setting systems, your goal tracking systems, because a plan without execution is just a wish. We’re also going to talk about your financial planning. I know I’ve said this before. Clinicians don’t like to talk about money, but we’re going to talk about profit. We’re going to talk about revenue. We’re going to talk about tax planning. Don’t glaze over. We’re going to talk about expense optimization, the whole thing. Stick with me because this really matters to your health and energy.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:29:07 And we’re going to talk about your accountability structure for the entire year, because consistency is what separates people who hit their goals from those who don’t. You’re going to leave this workshop with absolute clarity on where you’re going and how you’re going to get there. And here’s the best part. You don’t have to figure it out alone. As I’ve mentioned a couple times before in this podcast, I’ve been doing this for 20 years. We have hit over seven figures in revenue for over a decade, consistently year after year, with extremely strong profits. And we’ve done it with essentially zero debt, fully bootstrapped. This workshop is just the beginning of your experience in our membership. Our membership includes three live coaching calls every week because I take care of my bandwidth so I can take care of you and your bandwidth. On Mondays, we dive deep into your health coaching communication skills. These skills are really the secret sauce. What are your boundaries? How are you collaborating with your clients? This is the communication skill that keeps your client super engaged in the process from day one, and helps them overcome any obstacle to meeting their health goals.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:30:35 On Wednesdays, we deep dive into clinical skills and complex cases. This is where you become top 1% in your very specific niche. You are going to feel so confident. You’re going to be the person on those stages in that female athlete conference, on that top podcast, because you are confidently and really in the top 1% in the blue ocean you’ve created for yourself. On Thursdays, we have our business growth calls where we troubleshoot your positioning, your pricing, your marketing, your branding, your service model, everything we’ve been chatting about today. And these aren’t lectures. These are working. Coaching sessions. You bring your questions, your challenges, your cases. Anywhere you’re stuck. There are no bad questions. You know, come with everything. Our entire community will learn from your questions as we solve them and coach through them together. We’ve had members add $12,000 in revenue after one coaching call, because they finally got clear on their pricing strategy. We’ve had members launched their first group program and fill it in two weeks because they workshopped their messaging with us.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:32:01 You have to be able to communicate with the clients in your sub niche so they know you know what you’re talking about, so they know they can confidently trust you. We’ve had members completely pivot their niche and double their client It increase within just one month. When you get clear and focused. You are going to be shocked by the changes that happen in your work life. What will feel like overnight but is actually just a result of being really clear, really honest about the numbers, really honest about your physical and emotional bandwidth, and then taking focused action consistently over time with support. This is what happens when you have this ongoing support, when you’re not figuring it out alone. If you’re thinking, okay, I’m ready, I’m ready, Jessica, I want to make 2026 my year. I want to get clear on my niche. I want to be top 1% and actually build a business that works for me and deeply serve my clients to hit their goals. Join me in the membership. You’ll get access to this year’s Success Business Planning Workshop later this week.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:33:20 You’ll get all the details in the show notes. Plus, you’ll have access to all three weekly coaching calls each and every week. Plus, our entire library of courses and resources, plus a global community of like minded, like minded professionals. And we have like over 44 continuing education courses in there. And these are no costs, no pressure, no pitching. Like just clarity about what you actually need. And if you’re like, look, I know I need this, I gotta sit down.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:34:34 I gotta look honestly at my numbers. I gotta choose a niche. I have to finally get serious about this and stop just dabbling and taking courses but not applying them. Then join us this week so you can join me live for this really energizing workshop at Integrative Women’s Health Institute for Integrative Women’s Health Institute. Our membership is really fun, and these workshops are really fun because they’re engaging, they’re interactive. We coach people through their sticky points and we all have sticky points, so don’t worry about it. Come with all your sticky points. Here’s what I want you to take away from today’s episode. I want you to feel. That deep sense of calm and confidence. Specialization isn’t about narrowing your options. It’s about being really, really skilled at what you do so you can finally be that person to help that person that’s been searching everywhere. It’s about amplifying your impact when you try to serve everyone, which we all want to do, you actually end up diluting your message and it’s harder to connect with anyone.

Dr. Jessica Drummond 00:35:56 Your marketing feels generic. You’re physically, emotionally, and cognitively burnt out, your pricing is limited, and your clients can’t tell what makes you different. When you get specific though, when you say I help perimenopausal athletes maintain and improve their performance. I mean, imagine if you’re 70 year old client wins the Masters in the local 10-K. Like how exciting are 60 year old, however old she is right. This is so exciting. Or I specialize in sexual health during the menopause transition, when so many women think, oh, my sex life is over, I don’t really care what happens now, it’s just not a priority for me. Well, maybe deep down it is. Everything changes. Your ideal clients find you, your marketing rates itself, your pricing reflects your expertise, and you actually have that depth of expertise and experience and you just enjoy your work more. It actually gives you energy rather than draining you. Like, I want you to feel this Excited every single day. 2026 is your year to stop being a generalist, to stop saying maybe next year to stop thinking about it.
