Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based approach that can be effective in helping individuals move through the stages of change outlined in the Transtheoretical Model (TTM). The TTM proposes that people move through five stages of change: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance.
Navigating Change: Applying Motivational Interviewing to the Transtheoretical Stages of Change
This course explores the application of Motivational Interviewing (MI) in supporting individuals as they navigate the stages of change outlined in the Transtheoretical Model (TTM).
Participants will learn how to use MI techniques to support individuals at each stage of change, from increasing awareness and exploring ambivalence to maintaining behavior change over the long term.
The course will also cover common challenges in the behavior change process and how to address them using MI.
This course has been approved by IWHI and NBHWC under course approval #CEA-000284-1 for 3.00 CEUS; and by by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners for 3.00 CCUs for PTs and PTAs under course# 77801TX.
Course Objectives
Understand the Transtheoretical Model and the stages of change.
Describe the key principles of Motivational Interviewing and how they can be applied to each stage of change.
Demonstrate proficiency in using MI techniques to support individuals at each stage of change, including reflective listening, asking open-ended questions, developing a change plan, and addressing potential relapse triggers.
Identify common challenges in the behavior change process and develop strategies for addressing them using MI.
Apply MI to case studies or scenarios involving behavior change.
Evaluate the effectiveness of MI in supporting behavior change and identify areas for improvement in their own practice.
Course Format
This is a self paced recording of a masterclass that was originally taught live. The course consist of didactic information, group discussions, and breakout sessions. The breakout sessions have been removed for the purpose of this course but we highly encourage you to use that time to complete the included worksheets and handouts on your own in order to enhance experiential application.
