It is the role of the physical therapist to screen for and provide information on diet and nutritional issues to patients, clients, and the community within the scope of physical therapist practice.

— American Physical Therapy Association

The 6 Levels of Functional Nutrition Training You Need to Support Your Patients & Speed Recovery Times

LEVEL 1 is AVAILABLE NOW! (Levels 2-6 coming soon...)

Level 1: Optimizing Digestive Function and Gut Microbiome Health for Improved Rehab Outcomes

In this program, you will learn how to screen and assess for digestive function challenges, including hypochlorhydria, low digestive enzyme function, increased intestinal permeability ("leaky gut"), gut motility challenges, small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), and gut microbiome dysbiosis. You will learn available functional testing for these issues, and the evidence regarding their usefulness. You will learn evidence based solutions to digestive function challenges - nutrition, stress management, and nutrient and herbal supplementation - and how to use them. You will learn simple nutrition and mindful eating education to high level functional nutrition strategies to use within your scope of practice and/or make appropriate referrals. You will also learn the evidence for optimizing digestive and gut microbiome health in order to relieve joint and chronic pain, fatigue, neurodegeneration, and to hasten recovery from traumatic injury or surgery. A wide range of food plans from Vegan to Paleo and Ketogenic will be discussed in relationship to common rehab diagnoses such as back pain, diabetes, surgical orthopedic recovery, stroke, TBI, and Alzheimer’s disease. Available NOW!

Level 2: Nutrition, Immune Health, and the Rise of Autoimmunity in Rehab Patients

In this program, you will learn how the gut microbiome is a key factor in the development of the immune system, the relationship between digestive and immune health, and the we will discuss the rise of autoimmune disease, especially in women. You will learn how nutrition can support rehab therapies to improve and hasten healing from autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA.) In addition, we will discuss the role of chronic inflammation due to food sensitivities, stress, increased intestinal permeability, and visceral fat in reducing the immune system’s ability to fight chronic infections and the relationship of chronic immune stimulation to chronic pain and fatigue conditions. Coming soon!

Level 3: The Stress Response and Sleep Optimization for Patients with Pain and Fatigue

In this program, you will learn how the interaction between the stress response system, the hormone system, and inflammation impact mitochondrial function. For patients with chronic fatigue issues, including fibromyalgia, insomnia, post-surgical recovery, and stress-related pain exacerbations, we will discuss evidence based nutrition and lifestyle medicine strategies for balancing the stress response and improving mitochondrial energy (ATP) production. We will also discuss the impact of stress and lack of sleep on cardiovascular endurance and health, and neurodegeneration - from mild cognitive impairment to dementia. Coming soon!

Level 4: The Impact of Hormone Health on Patient Recovery

In this program, you will learn how the female and male sex hormone cycles, insulin and cortisol relationship, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis impact recovery for common conditions treated in rehabilitation. Specifically, we will address diabetes, obesity, chronic inflammatory conditions, and the impact of hypothyroidism on fatigue, memory, and chronic pain. For girls and women in puberty, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, perimenopause, and post-menopause, we will discuss the potential impact of hormonal cycles on exercise prescription, sports performance enhancement, and orthopedic injury recovery. We will also look at the literature on the impact of hormone imbalance and hormone replacement therapy on fatigue, brain health, and osteoporosis. Coming soon!

Level 5: How Environmental Toxicity can Impact Recovery for your patients, and What to Do to Reduce Toxic Exposures and Impact on Individual and Community Health

Environmental toxicity is a hot topic. Do your patients really need to detox, or is that just a fad? What are safe detox strategies? You will learn how can you screen for environmental toxin exposure. You will also learn evidence based strategies for reducing heavy metal and persistent organic pollutant exposures. Plus, you will learn the safest, simplest, and most effective ways to support your patient’s healthy detoxification system - the liver, skin, and respiratory detoxification. Finally, you will learn common genetic factors that could limit your patient’s ability to detoxify optimally on a daily basis. Coming soon!

Level 5: Nutrition and The Brain in Pain, Fatigue and Dementia

If you have patients who struggle with pain, fatigue, and even mild memory loss, this program is for you. We will consider what factors influence the brain’s pain signaling, and promote fatigue. You will learn key nutrition support to help your patients optimally and consistently fuel the brain. You will learn how to reduce low oxygen scenarios in the brain - such as low perfusion and anemia. And, we’ll tie together the previous levels by connecting how inflammation related to the previous system discussions - poor digestion, immune dysfunction, hormonal dysregulation, genetic snps, and environmental toxin exposures (including emotional toxins) - contribute to an increased risk of chronic rehab challenges, including chronic joint pain, poor surgical or injury recovery, obesity, memory loss or dementia, diabetes, or even poor sports performance. Coming soon!

She regularly lectures on topics such as integrative pelvic pain management, natural fertility options, optimal hormone health, and functional and integrative nutrition for rehabilitation, nutrition, wellness, fitness, and medical professionals.

Dr. Drummond was educated at the University of Virginia, Emory University, Duke Integrative Medicine, and Maryland University of Integrative Health

"The Functional Nutrition for Rehabilitation Professionals Program had a good balance of surface material with clinical application. It didn’t feel like getting lost in the deep biochemistry.

I liked that I was able to move through the program at my own pace and I would definitely recommend this program to my friends and colleagues!

The IWHI Community has the benefits of real time dialogue opportunities, good reference material for reviewing and an active social media group. I look forward to an ongoing learning experience through IWHI." --- Dr. Lori O’Neill, PT, DPT

"Jessica not only stays on the cutting edge of how to truly help clients and students gain their own knowledge and skills, but she walks the talk herself.

Jessica’s knowledge and skills in health coaching, nutrition, and women’s health are in a class of their own. She not only stays on the cutting edge of how to truly help clients and students gain their own knowledge and skills, but she walks the talk herself. It is obvious to all who encounter her that she leads the type of lifestyle her clients are seeking, and it’s very easy as a student and a client of hers to feel empowered to do the same. I’m grateful for all she has done for me!"

--- Dr. Julie Granger PT, DPT, SCS

"As I was looking for answers, I was lucky to meet Jessica Drummond a few years ago. Her wealth of knowledge, her sharp mind and open heart are what all of us need to become better practitioners and to bring our profession to the next level.

I am a PT with 20 years of experience, mostly in orthopedic setting. I have been always striving to achieve the best results with my patients. However, only when I started looking into a systemic component of their problems my results improved dramatically. I strongly recommend Jessica Drummond to all PTs who want to deliver better care to their patients, improve their own health and achieve a greater understanding of how nutrition, pain and inflammation are interrelated."
