WHAT IS ENDO BELLY?
Endo Belly, also known as Endometriosis Belly, is a common symptom experienced by people with endometriosis. It refers to the chronic bloating and distension of the abdomen that can occur with this condition. This symptom can be frustrating, uncomfortable, and often even painful.
Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus, typically in the pelvic area.
The tissue can grow on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other structures in the pelvis. Beyond the reproductive organs, endometriosis lesions can occur anywhere in the body, such as on the diaphragm, bowel, bladder, and ligaments.

CHAPTER 1: Defining Endo Belly
Endo Belly, also known as Endometriosis Belly, is a common symptom experienced by people with endometriosis. It refers to the chronic bloating and distension of the abdomen that can occur with this condition. This symptom can be frustrating, uncomfortable, and sometimes even painful.
Endometriosis lesions have even been found on the knee joint and inside of the nose. The growth and proliferation of these lesions can cause inflammation, pain, and scarring.
Endo Belly is caused by underlying dysbiosis of the small intestine and/or the colon, usually both. Dysbiosis is when the microbial community living in the intestines gets out of balance, with the beneficial bacteria being overrun by “bad” bacteria, fungi, and other microbes.
In fact, in the small intestine, the community of microbes should be quite small. When too many microbes (even some of the good guys) proliferate, bloating happens. Quite literally, the microbes in the intestines ferment the food that you eat and release gasses. It’s exactly the same thing that happens when you brew beer or kombucha.
When this happens in the small intestine, it’s called Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and/or Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth (SIBO and/or SIFO.) Associated with the microbial imbalances is inflammation, increased intestinal permeability, and stress on the immune system. (Did you know that about 80% of the immune system is in and around the digestive system?)
It is important for women with endometriosis to address their Endo Belly as it can exacerbate other symptoms, such as pelvic pain, nutrient malabsorption, and constipation or diarrhea. In short, Endo Belly can make Endometriosis that much more difficult to manage.
In the following chapters, we will discuss the steps to relieving Endo Belly, including dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, and targeted supplementation. We will also explore how to manage this symptom long-term to support overall health and well-being.
